Shoulder Dislocation Surgery in LucknowDr Hatif Siddiqui

When the shoulder dislocates, the ball comes out of the socket. The injury often tears the labrum, the rim of cartilage that deepens the socket. This is called a Bankart lesion.

In young, active people the torn labrum often does not heal back in place, so the shoulder keeps slipping out. Arthroscopic Bankart repair reattaches the labrum through small keyhole cuts to make the shoulder stable again.

Seek urgent care: for a shoulder that has just dislocated. It should be put back by a doctor, with an X-ray first to check for a fracture. Don't let anyone pull it forcefully.

Signs Your Shoulder Is Unstable

  • The shoulder has come out of joint more than once
  • A feeling that it is about to slip, especially with the arm raised and turned out
  • Avoiding throwing, swimming, gym work or sleeping on that side
  • Dislocation with minor movements, even in sleep
  • Pain, clicking or weakness after an earlier dislocation

Why Some Shoulders Keep Dislocating

The chance of repeat dislocation is highest in teenagers and young adults, and in people who play contact or overhead sports. Each new dislocation can damage the labrum and the socket bone further.

Assessment includes examination for looseness, an MRI (sometimes with contrast) to see the labrum, and often a CT scan to measure any bone loss from the socket or the ball. How much bone is lost decides which operation is best.

Treatment Options

After a first dislocation, many patients are treated with a short period in a sling and physiotherapy. Surgery is considered when the shoulder keeps dislocating or when the risk of that is high.

Sling and physiotherapy

After the shoulder is put back, a short period of rest in a sling is followed by strengthening of the rotator cuff and shoulder-blade muscles. Often enough for older or less active patients.

Arthroscopic Bankart repair

The torn labrum is reattached to the socket with small anchors and stitches through keyhole cuts. This restores stability for recurrent dislocation when bone loss is limited.

Bone-block procedure

When a large part of the socket bone has worn away from repeated dislocations, labral repair alone may not be enough, and a bone-block stabilisation may be advised.

Recovery After Bankart Repair

0–4 weeksArm in a sling; gentle movement exercises guided by the physiotherapist. Desk work is often possible within 1–2 weeks.
4–12 weeksSling off, range of movement restored step by step, then early strengthening.
3–4 monthsProgressive strengthening and non-contact sport-specific training.
4–6 monthsReturn to contact and overhead sports once strength, movement and confidence are back.

Typical ranges. Your plan is adjusted to the repair, your sport and your progress.

Shoulder Keeps Popping Out? A Real Patient Story

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need surgery after my first shoulder dislocation?

Not always. Many people are treated with a short period in a sling and physiotherapy. Surgery may be advised after a first dislocation for young athletes in contact or overhead sports, where the chance of it happening again is high.

What is a Bankart repair?

It is keyhole surgery to reattach the torn labrum (the rim of cartilage around the socket) using small anchors and stitches. It restores the shoulder's stability after dislocation.

How long is the recovery after shoulder stabilisation surgery?

The arm is usually in a sling for about 3–4 weeks, followed by physiotherapy. Most people return to light work within weeks and to contact or overhead sport in about 4–6 months.

Why does my shoulder keep coming out?

The first dislocation often tears the labrum and stretches the capsule. In younger people these often do not heal in the right place, so the shoulder stays loose and can dislocate again, sometimes with minor movements.

Is shoulder dislocation surgery done by keyhole?

Yes, a Bankart repair is usually done arthroscopically through a few small cuts. If there is major bone loss from the socket, an open bone-block procedure may be recommended instead.
